Fear is usually people’s compass through life, the most powerful emotion they have trouble to overcome. I usually tell my coachees when fear comes to acknowledge it and evaluate what kind of real danger they are in, which is none for their fear is generally a reflex reaction to a childhood emotional danger that no longer exists. Then I tell them to picture their fear as a small child coming to help and ask them to say thanks to that child for coming, that his help is no longer requested in that specific situation and that he can go back home. Unless we are confronted with direct violence, we are never ever in danger and it is important to remember it at all times, especially with the medias all around the world blowing fear 24/7. To cultivate self-awareness, practice mindfulness by checking in with yourself regularly throughout the day. Notice your emotions as they arise and reflect on what triggered them. Journaling can also help identify patterns in your emotional responses. This is a great article Sol.

As I've learned in my journey of befriending emotion, these strategies are practiced daily, even when the emotions may not be turbulent, so that when they are turbulent, navigating them comes easy.

What helped me immensely were the words of British Raconteur, Quentin Crisp. To paraphrase...more trouble is caused when we intervene in the lives of our friends thinking we know best. So now I try not to judge my friends by my set of values.

This is often something I struggle with. I know what I SHOULD do, I have all the tools, but when I am blind sided I sometimes go into a tailspin.
